A publication built on accuracy has to visibly eat its mistakes.
How we correct
Errors are corrected in place, with a dated note at the top of the article stating what was wrong and what it now says. We do not quietly edit. Anything that materially misled is retracted outright and carries a standing correction note in place of the original claim.
Corrections are published with the same prominence as the thing they correct. A mistake on the front page does not get fixed in a footnote.
What counts as an error
A claim that a cited source does not support. A figure reported without the denominator that makes it meaningful. A quote clipped so that its context changes its sense. An assertion about what someone intended, rather than what they did. Any of these is worth reporting to us, and the last one is the mistake we are most likely to make.
